The Promise
By Crystal

She sat on the edge of the cliff, overlooking the ocean. A light breeze blew her long, golden brown hair back slightly, while the gentle heat from the sun warmed her body. She just sat there, content, watching the waves crash below. Just then, she heard footsteps behind her. "Tina?" She turned around and saw him standing there. He stood 5'10", with shoulder length, blond hair and sparkling, soft blue eyes. "Tay, what are you doing here?" she asked. "To see you, of course," he answered with a smile on his face. "But how did you know I was here?" "Because I know you so well," he replied as he sat down next to her. He looked into her dark brown eyes. They were so bright and beautiful. They seemed to hypnotize him as he stared into them. She smiled and gave him a small kiss on the lips and leaned back against him. They just sat there for the rest of the afternoon, listening to the waves crash below them. They felt safe in each other's arms as they watched the sunset. With Taylor's arms wrapped around her, Tina started to drift off. Looking down at her, Taylor whispered in her ear, "I promised I would never leave you and I never will. I always keep my promises." Then he softly kissed her on the cheek as she slipped into the peaceful oblivion.

"Tina, wake up," came Diana's voice. Nothing. She shook her again. "Wake up sweetie." She opened her eyes and looked into the older woman's blue ones. "Hey Diana," Tina said with a yawn. She stood up and rubbed the back of her neck. "Those chairs are hard aren't they?" asked Diana. "Yeah, I don't know how you can stand it," she replied. "Well its simple dear, I sleep in the other bed," Diana said with a grin pointing to the other bed in the room. Tina rolled her eyes. "Well why didn't I think of that?"

She looked around at the dozens of flowers and "Get Well" cards that filled the room. She thought of the dream she just had and sadly stepped over to the bed she was sleeping next to. The bed where Taylor lay, unconscious. There were a number of machines and tubes attached to his body, and his skin was so pale that he was almost camouflage with the white hospital sheets. His left arm was in a cast and his ribcage was wrapped tightly with white bandages. Tears came to Tina's eyes as she took his hand in her own. With her other hand, she brushed a few stray hairs out of his eyes, noticing that the gash in his forehead that had required 22 stitches to close was nearly healed. A couple of tears fell from her eyes as she remembered the accident. Even though it had been nearly a month, the memory clung to her as if it had just happened yesterday.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Flashback~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Taylor and his brothers, Isaac and Zac, were outside riding their motorcycles up and down the street. Tina was on the front lawn with their younger brother and sisters watching the guys make idiots out of themselves, as usual. Everyone was laughing and having a good time when the car came speeding around the corner. Taylor tried to get out of the way but it was too late. The car hit the front of Taylor's motorcycle sending him flying over the car, tumbling down onto the pavement. Tina and the rest of Taylor's family rushed over to see if he was all right. He was unconscious and there was a huge gash in his forehead that was gushing with blood. "Isaac, go call 911, now!" Walker, his father, instructed with panic clearly showing in his voice. The rest was sort of a blur in Tina's mind until they were at the hospital, when the doctors told them that they had managed to stabilize him, but that Taylor had fallen into a coma.
"Tina honey?" Tina turned around and faced Diana, who looked like she'd been crying. "Tina, are you okay?" Diana asked. "I'm alright," she replied, squeezing Taylor's hand. They both sat there watching him, hoping that at any moment he would wake up. Tina's thoughts drifted, and a small smile appeared on her face as she remembered a time, about 6 or 7 months ago when Taylor was dropping her off from a date.
"I'll call you tomorrow ok?" Taylor said. Tina wrapped her arms around his neck. "Oh you better, or I just might have to hurt you."She teased. He laughed and wrapped his arms around her waist."Oh, trust me, you won't have to." "Good," she replied as she laid her head against his shoulder. She just stood there for a moment, content, just breathing him in. "You love me right?" she asked suddenly. He glanced at her strangely for a moment. "Of course," he answered. "You'd never leave me right?" She looked up into his eyes. "Never,' he answered. "You promise?" "I promise." He leaned down and sealed his promise with a kiss, holding onto her tightly. "I love you," he mumbled. "I love you, too."
Diana placed her hand on Tina's shoulder. "Tina honey, I think you should go home now and get some sleep." Tina looked down at Taylor and sighed. She didn't want to go home, but she knew that she should. She desperately wanted to take a nice long, hot shower and sleep for about 12 hours. "Ok, I'll go." "Good." Tina walked up to Taylor and kissed his temple. "Keep your promise," she whispered. Diana gave her a hug and walked her to the door. "You go home and get some rest and I'll call you if anything happens, ok?" "Ok." Diana kissed Tina on her forehead, and just as she was about to go out the door they both heard a low groaning sound come from behind them. Tina looked at Diana. "What was that?" "I don't know." They looked around the room and heard another groan come from Taylor's bed. They rushed over to him and Tina called his name. "Taylor?" Diana grabbed his hand and started to pat the side of his face. "Tay baby, can you hear me?" "Mom?" His voice was so faint that Tina wasn't sure if she really heard it, but Diana was. She looked at her son's pale face with tears in her eyes and watched as his blue eyes fluttered open. "Mom?" "Oh, my baby!" Diana was near hysterical as she threw her arms around Taylor and kissed him all over his face. Finally, she pulled back and started to softly, stroke his hair with tears running down her face. "Oh Taylor, I'm so glad your ok," she said with a teary voice. A few minutes went by and she started to compose herself and stood up brushing the tears off of her face. "I'm gonna go get the doctor, ok sweetie?" Taylor nodded weakly as his mom leaned down and kissed his forehead. "I love you, baby." With that she ran out to find the doctor. Taylor looked over and noticed the other person in the room. "Tina?" He whispered. Tina walked over to him with tears dripping down her face and wrapped her arms around him, hugging him tightly. Then just as she was about to say something, Taylor whispered in her ear. "I told you, I always keep my promises."
